A rare white deer has been shot in Bootle by the local police after it was found roaming the streets.

Merseyside Police state that they took the decision on the basis of public safety. They state that the deer had been roaming the streets for a number of hours and was in distress. The police force also outlined that they had tried to secure assistance to help save the deer, but were unable to do so.

The decision has provoked backlash from many, but also received the backing of groups including the British Deer Society.
