Three-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Olive, has joined Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue as the UK’s first Oscar Kilo 9 accredited dog.
Olive was rescued from an illegal puppy farm by the local Police force and will now serve as a ‘Fire Wellbeing and Trauma Support Dog’.
Mark Foster, Fire Watch Manager, has now become Olive’s handler. Olive will be called upon to spend time with firefighters who may have become despondent, have attended a particularly difficult job, or are suffering from long-term, work-related stress.
Support dogs are used across multiple industries, including other emergency services, and have been noted to increase Oxytocin and Serotonin levels in humans and reduce blood pressure.
