For the 11th consecutive year, Conservative controlled Northumberland County Council’s Animal Welfare Team has been awarded the RSPCA’s prestigious Gold Footprint Award.

The award recognises the proactive work of public service organisations which seek to ensure higher animal welfare standards within their community.

The team at Northumberland County Council was recognised for their effort to better inform owners of domesticated animals about responsible ownership and the running of a micro-chipping service to reduce stray and homeless animals.

The number of stray animals collected by councils has experienced a decline in the past few years, partly attributed to new Government legislation which requires the micro-chipping of dogs.
