Tim Rogers, a cattle farmer on the Isle of Wight, has launched a new and innovative project to protect livestock and improve animal welfare standards through the use of a private text message reporting system.

Livestock Lookout gives tourists, passers-by, and other land holders the opportunity to get directly involved with animal welfare, reporting any concerns, via text, to the landowner.

Each site (typically a single field) will be given a unique reference number, allowing members of the public to alert the owner of the land who can then take swift action to resolve any concerns.

The system has previously been used to report escaped cattle, injured animals, trapped or distressed animals, and broken fences.

Advocates for the system believe that digital reporting will increase engagement with the countryside and help tourists and visitors to find their role within this ecosystem.
