The Government appears set to back proposals being put forward by Lords which would ban lobsters being boiled alive in the UK.
The Animal Welfare (Sentience) Bill, which is currently in the Lords as part of the legislative process, would see the Government acknowledge that a number of animals have the ability to feel pain. However, at present the Bill only covers vertebrates.
Under the Lords proposals, crustaceans and other sea life including octopuses will be recognised as having sentience as well, which would result in methods of killing such as boiling being banned.
The Bill is continuing its passage at present, having first been announced in the Queen’s Speech this year.
